Travelling in the Jura Lakes and Small Mountains region
Classified as a Natura 2000 site for the exceptional diversity of its natural environments, the Petite Montagne is an area where it’s good to breathe. Here, water is everywhere! With children, as a couple or with friends, swimming is a must. It’s impossible to resist the turquoise waters of Lac de Chalain, the largest natural lake in the Jura! Don’t miss a dip in Saint-Point, the “Jura Riviera”, or Ilay, with its majestic cliffs in the background. Lac de Vouglans and Clairvaux-les-Lacs are other must-sees for water sports enthusiasts.
Prefer more confidential sites and hiking? La Petite Montagne also has that in its catalog. Destination the summit of Pic de l’Aigle or the Belvédère des 4 Lacs (Narlay, Ilay, Petit and Grand Maclu) for breathtaking panoramas! And don’t forget the Vallée du Hérisson – Plateau des 7 Lacs, a Grand Site de France! In any case, don’t miss the famous Route des Lacs!
Not sure where to stay in the Jura this summer? In the heart of the region, the Azureva mountain village in the Métabief resort is an excellent springboard for travel in the Pays Vert.
Stroll through characterful towns without getting bored
If the Jura is a Nature region par excellence, it’s no slouch when it comes to built heritage. Here are the top 3 must-sees!
Baumes-les-Messieurs
Nestled in a setting of 3 timeless secluded villages, this Most Beautiful Village is certainly living up to its name! Admire its spectacular caves, tuff waterfalls and abbey… Admirable for their deep, narrow valleys bordered by sheer cliffs, ending in dead ends and gushing streams, the Reculées are a remarkable feature of the Jura: Blois-sur-Seille, Ladoye-sur-Seille, Planches-près-d’Arbois…
Dole
The former capital of Franche-Comté, the aptly named “Venice of the Jura” has earned its label as a Ville d’Art et d’Histoires (Town of Art and History). Discover its treasures (Collegiate Church, Hôtel-Dieu, canals…) with the “Chat perché” tour. Did you know? The author of the famous tales, Marcel Aymé, grew up in Dole. The capital of Franc-Comtois gastronomy, Dole is also a meeting place for true gourmets. A visit during the Chat perché gourmet weekend is a must. On the tasting pass menu: Emmental grand cru, Comté, Cancoillotte, Fondue Comtoise, Croquettes Jurassiennes, Mini-soufflés au comté, Morbier, Vache Qui Rit, Vin jaune, Macvin, Soupe de Gaudes…
Château-Chalon
The birthplace of Vin Jaune, this small, picturesque Comtois town, perched like a sentinel over the Jura vineyards, is well worth a visit. On the program: visits and, of course, tastings of the “King of Wines”!
Want some more? Arbois (Capital of Jura wines and chocolate), Arinthod, Arlay (Capital of Vin de Paille), Nozeroy, Orgelet, Poligny, Salins-les-Bains, Sellières…
Photographing autumn landscapes worthy of Canada
In autumn, the Jura undergoes a metamorphosis. Get your cameras ready: this ephemeral blaze is worth every detour. What about exploring one of France’s most beautiful fir forests: the Joux Forest? On the aptly named Route des Sapins (42 km), this vast playground dotted with tourist attractions promises not only great photos, but also gigantic fir trees several hundred years old, marked hiking and mountain-biking trails, breathtaking panoramas, playgrounds, a biological forest reserve…
The Jura lakes are another great place to take pictures. Particularly spoiled by Mother Nature, they also offer an explosion of color in autumn. Direction to all : Bonlieu, Genin, Vouglans, Belvédère de la Petite Écosse (or 4 Lacs)… And don’t forget your camera!
And don’t panic: “Rain in the morning is not the day (proverb franc-comtois)”! So, will you let yourself be won over by the mountains and other emblematic Jura landscapes for your next vacation? At the edge of the woods, at an altitude of some 1000m, our mountain village in Métabief offers you a guaranteed change of scenery and made-to-measure services.
