Journey through history with the Murol fortress

Listed as a historic monument since 1889, the Château de Murol is a must-see in the Auvergne for the whole family. Children will love the colorful medieval peasant welcome, the chivalry show… With a guided tour full of humor and anecdotes, you’ll learn all about the daily life of a 15th-century squire. A great lord and adventurous knight who died at the exceptional age of 90 (1440), Guillaume II de Murol wrote extensively. His personal accounts (diaries, autobiographical testament, etc.) have enabled us to create an exceptional reconstruction of the house: Madame’s bedroom, kitchen, cellar, kitchen garden, farmyard… Immersion guaranteed, even for dogs (for once)!

A smooth ride for your tribe

With its “Famille Plus” label, the Auvergne town is a tribal favorite! After the assault on the fortress, how about discovering Murol and its medieval heritage with a treasure hunt? Pick up a Tibou Mag’ at the tourist office and write down the answers to piece together the mystery word. The prize: a gift!

Another option for admiring this authentic village that inspires so many artists (L’École de Murol): easy walks suitable for all-terrain baby carriages, scooters and mountain bikes, with observation games. Download the free roadbooks for these short, gentle walks on the Sancy Explorer mobile app: Le Sentier du Coq, Le Chemin de la Reine Margot, La Ronde des Cascades, Le Bois de Charlannes, Le Tour du Lac de Chambon…

After these mini-tours (and surprises to collect), children can keep busy with the latest issue of Tibou Mag: riddles, games, ideas…

Bathing in a volcanic lake is a matter of course!

It’s impossible to spend a vacation in Murol without enjoying a spot of swimming. France’s water tower, the Massif Central abounds in lakes shaped by volcanic activity, as well as springs, rivers and waterfalls.

Just 5 minutes from Murol in a green setting, the Lac Chambon seaside resort is a superb site for a vacation with your feet in the water. With its Blue Flag label, this natural mountain lake offers activities for the whole family: beach with supervised swimming, games, restaurants, water sports (canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, pedal-boating…). The lake is shallow and pleasantly warm in summer. It’s also an excellent fishing spot.

Gourmet breaks before the Sancy must-sees

Before discovering the Sancylian heritage, there’s nothing like a good mountain breakfast to get you off to a good start. And in Auvergne, no meal is complete without cheese! How could you do otherwise, with no fewer than 5 AOPs? Saint-Nectaire, Bleu d’Auvergne, Cantal, Fourme d’Ambert and Salers are a must after river trout and a pan-fried wild mushroom or potée. And let’s not forget stuffed cabbage, aligot, truffade or Saint-Nectaire fondue! A pure delight. And for dessert, there’s no escaping the wild blueberry tart or the apple pompe.

Satisfied? Then it’s off to discover the local heritage: the medieval town of Besse, the Super Besse ski area, the petrifying fountains of Saint-Nectaire, the troglodyte fortress of Jonas, the Ruchers du Sancy, the Parc du Prélong, the spa resort of La Bourboule…

A land of nature and unique volcanic landscapes, the Sancy is also ideal for outdoor activities and sports: hiking (on foot, bike or horseback), zip-lining, hot-air ballooning or paragliding, trail running… Book your winter or summer holiday in Murol, Auvergne, with Azureva and make the most of this mid-range mountain as quickly as possible.
