Fill up on Nature and Sunshine on the Ile d’Oléron
On the Ile d’Oléron, the sun shines almost all year round. The most southerly of the Charente islands is blessed with mild winters and never too hot summers. While swimming is very pleasant from June to October on the west coast (Atlantic Ocean) and northeast coast (Mer du Pertuis), the Ile d’Oléron is a little paradise all year round.
Renowned for its magnificent sandy beaches that stretch on forever, La Lumineuse is not just a temple to idleness and water-based leisure activities. It’s also a haven for lovers of unspoilt nature. It boasts two remarkable sites that have been awarded the Échappées Nature label: Marais aux Oiseaux and Port des Salines. And don’t miss the Moëze-Oléron nature reserve, France’s leading wintering site for small wading birds. Stroll through the state-owned forest of Saint-Trojan. Stroll through the mudflats, oyster beds and marshes shaped by the salt industry in Oléron…
Discover the riches of oléron with your family
With over 600 wild and domestic animals, the Marais aux oiseaux is a wonderful playground for young and old alike: mini-farm, educational trail, wild animal trail, observatory…
Another must-see for family vacations on the Ile d’Oléron: the Port des Salines. Still in operation, this discovery and leisure area is a fun way to learn more about a tradition dating back to the Benedictine monks: salt production.
Tired of the great outdoors? Get the whole family on board Le p’tit Train de Saint-Trojan for a relaxing ride along the wild coast, discovering breathtaking landscapes inaccessible by road.
Gourmet breaks
It’s impossible to spend a vacation on the Ile d’Oléron without enjoying seafood: fish, shellfish and crustaceans. Oysters, already appreciated in Gallo-Roman times, now benefit from a Protected Geographical Indication (Fine de Claire Verte, Pousse en Claire…). For those with a sweet tooth, there are two must-sees to make sure they’re to your liking: La route des huîtres, between Le Château-d’Oléron and Boyardville, and the Fort Royer site.
Mussel aficionados absolutely must try éclade. Accompanied by wide buttered slices (with Charentes butter, of course!) and a little local white wine, this specialty is a pure delight. And, to finish on a high note, how about a delicious galette charentaise with a sweet white Pineau des Charentes?
Take a breath of fresh air and visit the must-sees
For those who haven’t yet discovered the island of Oleron, here’s a menu designed to make sure you don’t miss out:

- Saint-Denis-d’Oléron: the Pointe du bout du monde lighthouse and its exceptional panorama (only if you’re brave enough to climb the 220 steps!);
- Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron: the small artisanal fishing port of La Cotinière with its fish auction;
- the rocky foreshore at low tide to play treasure hunter;
